Why does a battery age even when you barely use your device

A lightly used phone or laptop does not escape battery aging. Time, heat, charge level and chemistry matter as much as visible use.

Context

A battery also ages with time

A lithium-ion battery degrades through use, but it also ages simply as time passes. Even when a device is rarely used, internal chemical reactions continue and gradually reduce the maximum capacity.

This calendar ageing explains why a lightly used phone or laptop can still lose autonomy after a few years.

Consensus

Heat and high charge levels speed up degradation

The technical consensus is strong on this point: high temperatures and spending long periods at a very high state of charge accelerate battery ageing. A device left in a hot car or kept at 100% continuously is not in an ideal situation.

That is also why manufacturers increasingly offer optimized charging features designed to limit time spent at the highest charge levels.

Controversy

Cycle count does not explain everything

Battery health is often reduced to the number of charge cycles. That number is useful, but incomplete. Two devices with a similar cycle count can age differently depending on heat exposure, depth of discharge, cell quality and storage conditions.

Perceived battery life also depends on software and usage patterns, which affect energy consumption without necessarily reflecting the chemistry of the cell itself.

Consequences

The effect shows up in autonomy and sometimes repairability

An ageing battery usually means shorter battery life and, eventually, a higher likelihood of replacement. The availability of parts, the cost of repair and the design of the device then become important.

Recent European rules on devices and repairability aim to improve information and extend product use, but they do not eliminate the underlying chemistry of battery ageing.

Guidance

Reducing heat and avoiding extremes genuinely helps

To extend battery life, limit heat exposure, avoid repeated deep discharges, do not store the device fully empty for long periods and avoid chasing 100% charge all the time.

The goal is not a perfect charging ritual. It is to reduce known ageing factors. A battery remains a consumable component, but its decline can often be slowed by more moderate conditions.

The essentials, not the last word

A battery can age even when the device is barely used because time, heat and state of charge affect its chemistry independently of cycle count.
