Does a more expensive smartphone last longer

Price, repairability, battery endurance and software support tell different stories. A premium label is not a lifespan measurement.

Context

Lasting means remaining useful

A phone may still turn on while becoming difficult to use because of its battery, software or unavailable spare parts. Durability combines physical resistance, repair options, useful autonomy and continued security.

Price can reflect cameras, materials or market positioning. It does not replace checking commitments for the exact model.

Consensus

European requirements provide reference points

New EU requirements apply from 20 June 2025 to covered smartphones and tablets placed on the market. The Commission lists battery endurance of at least 800 cycles with 80% remaining capacity under the specified test conditions.

It also describes spare-part and software-support requirements. The energy label includes repairability and endurance information. These are not guarantees of every individual phone's lifetime.

Controversy

Every support promise needs a starting date

A statement such as "five years of updates" requires a starting point. The Commission's description of minimum operating-system upgrade availability relates to the last unit of the model placed on the market.

For a refurbished device, investigate the model's age, remaining support and battery condition, not just its cosmetic grade. Older second-hand products do not automatically fall under every new requirement.

Consequences

A durable phone must remain protectable

ANSSI documents threats targeting mobile devices. Software support is therefore a security issue as well as a feature issue.

A replaceable battery and accessible spare parts may extend use. Repair cost and availability influence total ownership cost, not just the purchase discount.

Guidance

Compare evidence instead of tiers

Identify the exact model, support commitments, battery-replacement cost and spare-part availability. For second-hand purchases, ask for available diagnostics and warranty terms.

An older flagship can have less support remaining than a newer basic device. This is a reason to compare specific information, not a universal recommendation for one market segment.

The essentials, not the last word

A higher price is not a durability metric. Battery condition, repair options, parts and remaining support provide a more useful comparison.
